. president obama and speaker boehner met privately yesterday. nbc news first read team makes this point. if the plan is to get something passed by friday, december 21, right before the christmas holiday, then the legislation has to be written by december 18th and that means that obama and boehner must reach a deal by december 14th, 15th if there is going to be a deal. so the time for posturing and pr is over. a new political poll shows that likely voters support the president's tax increase on the upper brackets. 60% favor raising taxes on households that earn more than $250,000. 64% favor raising taxes on large corporations. 33 oppose. the poll asked likely voters, do you believe that if we raise taxes on households that earn over $250,000 per year, it will have a negative impact on the economy. 38% said yes. 58% got it right and said no. today president obama outlined the deficit reduction legislation he would sign into law. >> what you need is a package that keeps taxes where they are for middle class families, we make some stuff spending cuts on things that we don't need, and then w

about -- spectrum of ways you heard about the obama campaign communicating with folks with new technologies. there's a lot of segmentation. one of the reasons i did interviews in all the places i talk about is i speak a neutral spanish. you can't place my spanish geographically for a corky set of reasons allowing them to use me in a multitude of places. there's one place where i did one interview all fall, which was orlando. that has a large spanish language media. it's a puerto rican area, and you don't need someone with my skill set speaking to puerto ricans, but fellow port puerto ricans. that's true in other parts of the country. there's a much more deliberate effort this time to ensure in ads and media outreach, and just people to people outreach that you speak to and through folks through the same subgroup. >> and different issues as well? >> yeah. >> i mean, is information coming in a different way? >> issues, this time, at least in my experience, born out in the national exit polls, the issues latinos cared about this time were the issues, the mainstream, if you will, t

the buck stops, and that's where you get the negotiations going. we don't want to overlook, though, a new "washington post"/pew research poll that shows americans are blaming the problems of these negotiations on republicans. 53% are blaming congressional republicans. 27% are blaming barack obama. 12% are blaming both equally republicans are shouldering the blame by a 2-1 margin. and of those polled, 49% don't expect a deal to be reached by a deadline compared to 40% who do. here we have, again, a serious problem with republican branding. and branding comes from reality. people -- their natural instinct is to blame the republican party when standoffs like this occur. >> i'm surprised the number of 53% is that low. i would think it would be much higher than that. people get their news of politics today through television. so they see the republicans going after susan rice for four or five weeks or for three or four weeks. they now see the republicans seemingly standing in the way of a deal that could cost them in terms of their paychecks, money coming out of their paychecks at the expense

this new leader and which direction he wants to go is still uncertain. >> so in a lot of all that, i mean, what do you recommend if you were actually advising president obama at this time to do? people don't know who he is. he, obviously, is trying to do the muscle flex here. the six-party talks have been a failure. they basically ended back in 2009. what would you recommend? >> well, i'm not privy to their deliberations. what i would recommend is, first, you do have to fulfill obligations under the security council. there was a violation of missile launching. but i think a more creative way to deal with him needs to happen, and it has to solve south korea, japan, china and us principally. maybe engagement, finding somebody to talk to them, sending an envoy there or meeting an envoy halfway or within the six-party talks get them going again. talk to them. i'm not saying give them anything, but, again, i think he's doing this for domestic reasons. the new leader. maybe after he's already shown that he is firmly in charge he'll be ready to deal. you can't just sanction and isolate and punis
